Man killed after crash with train in northern Indiana

The man was identified as 55-year-old Stephen D. Schmahl, of Syracuse, Indiana.

TURKEY CREEK, Ind — A man was killed Wednesday afternoon in northern Indiana after his car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing. 

According to a press release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office, around 1 p.m. on Feb. 28, Kosciusko County deputies were dispatched to the railroad crossing at North Bishop Road in Turkey Creek Township

First responders arrived at the scene to find a 2005 Toyota Sequoia had been struck by a CSX train traveling westbound. A preliminary investigation showed that the Toyota had become stopped on the tracks for an unknown reason when it was stuck by the train and pushed for three-quarters of a mile.

The driver was identified as 55-year-old Stephen D. Schmahl, of Syracuse, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said he was the only person in the vehicle.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office, the crash remains under investigation.

Turkey Creek Township is roughly 130 miles north of downtown Indianapolis.
