ISP trooper saves woman from partially submerged car near Seymour

An Indiana State Police trooper saved a woman from a partially submerged car in Jackson County Friday.

SEYMOUR, Ind. (WTHR) - An Indiana State Police trooper saved a woman from a partially submerged car in Jackson County Friday.

Police say ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles was reconstructing an accident on Interstate 65 with another trooper when a report came in about a crash on SR 11 north of Seymour. Dispatchers said a woman was trapped inside a vehicle in the water.

Wheeles arrived to to find the car partially submerged and sinking and immediately went to the aid of the driver, 23-year-old Megan Fleetwood of Jeffersonville. Someone else at the scene gave Wheeles a hammer, which he used to break the back window of the car and pull Fleetwood out and to safety.

Wheeles injured his hand and arm during the rescue. He and Fleetwood were taken to a Seymour hospital for treatment.

Seymour police and firefighters assisted at the scene.
