Local church inspires IMPD with a community roll call

Dozens of officers gathered for roll call inside The Father's House, off South Franklin Road, for prayer, fellowship, food and more.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of IMPD officers began showing up for roll call Friday, Sept. 13 on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

But it wasn't your ordinary roll call.

They gathered inside The Father's House, off South Franklin Road, for prayer, fellowship, food and more.

"It's truly magnificent for the law enforcement community, and we're very grateful for that," IMPD Capt. Steve Walters said.

This is the 16th year that Vicki and Dr. Chris Holland have held an IMPD roll call event, showing their appreciation for officers.

"Just out of our hearts, we wanted to not be a silent majority to be the very loud majority," said Dr. Chris Holland, pastor of The Father's House.

His wife, Vicki, agreed and said she's spoken with countless officers who expressed thanks.

"They only get to deal with people who have been victimized or by the criminal aspect of humanity, and there is no platform for this where they actually get to feel, see and touch tangible support of smiling faces and warm handshakes and genuine love," Vicki said.

Many officers are faced with violent encounters while on duty.

"Our heart was, dear God, if they have to do this job, at least let's do something that encourages them so they can reflect back on something good," Chris said.

That something good surrounded a hot meal catered by local businesses, some desserts that were baked by volunteers, raffle prizes and other items donated by are businesses.

"This church, every week, prays for them in their service, and then, every day, the members of this church are praying for them," Indianapolis FOP President Rick Snyder said.

It's a day of the year many officers look forward to.

"I think it's because they see the support from the community, they know that it's sincere and it doesn't get much better than this," Snyder said.

Officers were able to fellowship with countless volunteers who took the day off work to show their gratitude.

"It's a great symbol of unity within our community," Snyder said.

"It's really heartwarming for us, and it's a great morale booster for the officers that come out here and get to enjoy the fellowship," Walters said.

This gives community members the opportunity to thank IMPD for helping keep them safe.
