Inspiring Indiana | New project introduces young girls to auto racing

On International Day of The Girl Child, organizers of a new project hope to close the gender gap in racing.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's International Day of The Girl Child and there's a new project introducing young girls in Central Indiana to the world of auto racing.

It's inspiring Indiana.

Friday, professional racers and pit crew members stopped by the STEM Experience Center at Camp Dellwood. That's where groups of young girls got to try out racing simulators and learn about the science behind motorsports.

Organizers say the idea for the project came from a growing curiosity they've been seeing among girls.

"This is the first week and we've had about 60 girls come through this week. They walk in not really sure what to expect and then we have to almost peel them off of the steering wheel by the time we're done ," said Danielle Shockey of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. "This has the potential for girls to compete with other girls with simulators all around the world, frankly, so we actually see this being a place where they can learn and actually compete in this space."

Organizers hope this Sim for STEM program will help close the gender gap in racing and what better place to do it than the Racing Capital of the World.
