NBA All-Star moms surprise IPS students with shoes | Inspiring Indiana

Some of the moms in Indianapolis to watch their sons play in the big game are shining a light on an important cause.

INDIANAPOLIS — Hundreds of students at an Indianapolis school were surprised with new tennis shoes Friday.

Some NBA All-Stars' moms were in Indianapolis to watch their sons play in the NBA All-Star Game. However, before the game, they are shining a light on an important cause.

"I didn't expect all of that though," De'nilah Roper said.

Students were surprised at Anna Brochhausen Elementary School 88 with brand new shoes.

"I love them," Roper said.

What Roper and Rinha Mendoza didn't realize is the moms of NBA All-Stars made it possible.

"Wherever our sons play, that's where we'll go," said Wanda Durant, Kevin Durant's mother.

Wanda and Malik Beasley's mom, Deena, are a part of the O.U.R. Mothers Inc. They're teaming up with the nonprofit Shoes that Fit program and Footlocker.

"Once you get a new pair of shoes on your feet, you're excited, you're happy." Deena said. "It just helps them mentally."

"It just warms my heart, and sometimes, it just brings me to tears because I remember our very humble beginnings," Wanda said. "There were times when I needed support, and there were times when people gifted my children."

These moms are shining their own light on All-Star Weekend and serving as the real MVP.

"To look in a child's eyes and to see their excitement and their gleam," Wanda said. "It's not about the glitz and glamor for me. This is what's it about for me."
