Indy teen chases dream of becoming a well-known DJ

Over the years, Ben Karazim has DJ'd countless weddings, proms and big events around the Hoosier state.

INDIANAPOLIS — Ben Karazim is a sophomore at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.

He's 16 years old and also known as DJ BK.

Even though he's young, he is not a new face in the disc jockey industry.

Inside his home studio in Indianapolis, a wall of memories shows Karazim's years of DJing around the world.

Karazim said he remembers loving music as a young boy.

"I would always find myself dancing to the DJs, and now as the DJ, I never stop dancing," Karazim said.

Over the years, Karazim has DJ'd countless weddings, proms and big events around the Hoosier state. That includes being selected as one of 24 Homecourt DJs during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend.

Karazim also DJ'd at this year's Rev at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"Seeing everybody dancing and coming through the door and giving hugs to friends, it truly was an awesome experience," Karazim said.

If you missed him at the track this year, you can catch him inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where he DJs for the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Fever.

"Being in the arena, that's energy level 1,000 there," Karazim said.

Back at home, Karazim calls his home studio a multipurpose space, where he produces his own music and hones his craft as a DJ.

"And obviously for homework, since I'm still in school," Karazim said. "I give thanks to my mom and my dad for allowing me to have space of my own, so I can practice every day and make as much music as I want and as I need to."

At just 16 years old, this DJ is wise beyond his years.

Underneath all this high-tech equipment, you'll find rows and rows of old vinyl. Karazim said he can turn old disco tracks into new house music.

"I like to say, 'if you're not dancing, you're doing it wrong,'" Karazim said. "Honestly, it's the beat. It's the lyrics. It's whatever that wow-factor in that song is for you."

Even then, Karazim knew he wanted to travel and DJ in Ibiza, Spain.

He achieved that goal and took it the next level.

A few years ago, Karazim discovered Ibiza Stardust Radio and decided to send them a mix. Radio officials loved him and decided to make him a resident DJ.

"And so now, every first and third Thursday of the month, my mixes are played worldwide on Ibiza radio," Karazim said.

Karazim also DJ'd during a festival in Ibiza, but only after he made a deal with his mom.

"I had to speak in 100% Spanish once the wheels touched down until we left Spain," Karazim said. "When I tell you that was an experience like no other, I truly mean it."

Now, Karazim says his career goals are even bigger: to play in more local, national and international music festivals.

"Any places that would welcome house music and welcome a DJ like me," Karazim said.

Despite all the long hours and hard work, DJ BK signs off on the idea that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.

"It never feels like work," Karazim said. "It never feels like a task. It never feels like a chore."

Karazim said most of the money he makes from booking gigs goes toward his college fund, upgrading his equipment and travel expenses.

After thanking his family for their continued support, Karazim also thanked his team at Deckademics DJ School in Indianapolis, Nick Saligoe, Douglas Morris and Niko Flores.
