Fishers native and NBA player Gary Harris inspires basketball court murals

A group of local artists are painting basketball courts at Brooks School Park in Fishers as a tribute to Fishers native and NBA player Gary Harris.

FISHERS, Ind. — With each roll of the paint brush, Kota Witsken and her fellow artists are one layer closer to their latest masterpiece.

However, these murals aren't on canvas or in an exhibit. They're on the basketball court, and it's a full court press.

"So we are at Brooks School Park in Fishers," said Witsken. "And its definitely been a team sport to get the job done."

They're getting the job done all thanks to Orlando Magic guard and Fishers native Gary Harris.

"So go Magic!" laughed Witsken.

"He grew up just a street away from Brooks School Park and these courts are where he learned the game," said Witsken about Harris. "So he wanted to give back to the community that helped him find his dream."

When it comes to the artwork, Gary Harris had his own idea of what it should be.

"The designs themselves on each court are both cosmic galaxy-themed because Gary wanted to inspire future players to reach for the stars," said Witsken. "Whether they're playing basketball or they're interested in art, it's just a really great way for them to get inspired and get involved in our community."

A basketball court at Brooks School Park in Fishers features art inspired by Fishers native and NBA player Gary Harris.

"The fact that its going to inspire so many generations to come is really cool," said Josh Brinson. "We've had so many kids stopping by the court and asking when they'll be able to play and I feel like the colors really add to the energy of this park."

It's an inspirational goal and a unique intersection between athletics and art.

By the looks of it, it's a slam dunk.
