5-year-old South Bend boy who survived dog attack reunites with officers who saved his life

Master Compton Jr. is healing from multiple head and neck injuries and lacerations from the attack earlier this summer.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — An Indiana boy who nearly lost his life after a brutal dog attack met the first responders who helped him. 

Five-year-old Master Compton Jr. is healing from multiple head and neck injuries and lacerations from the attack earlier this summer.

Thursday night, he got to meet the South Bend police officers who rushed him to the hospital. The officers arrived before the ambulance got to the scene.

One of the officers, Lt. Maranda Baker, put Compton in a patrol car to get him to the hospital faster. Baker and three other officers performed life-saving measures on the boy before and during the drive to the emergency room, the South Bend Police Department said.

The reunion happened at the Notre Dame hockey game.

Compton's dad said the group saved his son's life. The officers created a Build-A-Bear just for the boy.

"It meant so much to us to be able to see Master thriving and continuing to make remarkable strides in his recovery," the police department wrote in a Facebook post.

The reunion was part of Notre Dame hockey's First Responders Night.
