INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) said they will be removing the community recycling drop-off sites at Beck Service Center "effective immediately."
Indy DPW said those who continue to leave waste at the site will receive illegal dumping fines.
The closest public drop-off recycling sites to the Beck Service Center are the Kroger locations on 8130 E. Southport Road and 8745 S. Emerson Ave.
Officials said all recyclable materials must be "loose, clean, and dry," and all cardboard boxes must be flattened before being recycled. Bagged recyclables can't be processed because the plastic bags get caught in machines and put the employees at risk of potential hazards.
The following materials are accepted at the community drop-off recycling sites for free:
- All colors of glass
- #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs (no Styrofoam, plastic bags, or plastic film)
- Aluminum, tin, and steel beverage and food cans
- Newspapers, broken down cardboard boxes, paper and magazines
Legal disposal options exist for all other forms of waste:
- Furniture and bulky items should be brought to the Citizens' Transfer Station or set out on your heavy trash pickup day.
- Extra household trash bags should also be brought to the Citizens' Transfer Station.
- Household hazardous waste and most electronics can be recycled at one of the City's ToxDrop locations.
- Electronics can also be recycled at RecycleForce's new headquarters at 816 N. Sherman Drive during their regular weekday hours.
Officials said illegal dumping, or leaving trash, furniture, hazardous waste, debris, or any other non-recyclable material at these sites is prohibited, and you can be fined up to $2,500. Leaving recyclable materials that cannot fit into the box on the pavement is also considered illegal dumping.
