Indiana Gov. Holcomb traveling to Ukraine to meet with President Zelenskyy

The governor along with a group of other officials will head from Milan to Kyiv Thursday, Sept. 5, and discuss Indiana's role in maintaining overseas relationships.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Thursday morning he is leading a trip to Ukraine to focus on subnational diplomacy to strengthen future economic, academic and cultural relationships.

This will be the first time a U.S. governor is traveling to the country since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

“Indiana’s horizons extend far beyond our borders and where others may hesitate, Hoosiers step up for friends in need,” Holcomb said in a statement. “Ukrainians are resilient, courageous and talented and by strengthening the global connection, even during the most challenging of times, our communities and our people can mutually prosper, grow and thrive.”

The governor, along with a group of other officials, will head from Milan to Kyiv Thursday, Sept. 5, and discuss Indiana's role in maintaining overseas relationships.

Holcomb will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "to discuss how Indiana can strengthen its support of Ukraine now and in the future, including continuing critical agricultural and life science support," his office said in a statement.

During the trip, the governor will also visit the Wall of Remembrance for Ukraine to honor those who have lost their lives in the fight against Russia.

The visit marks Holcomb's 25th international development trip as governor and his first trip to Ukraine.

The governor's office said the travel is being paid for through private donations to the Indiana Economic Development Foundation.
