PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - An inmate who was on the run in Indiana is back in police custody.
Michael Maldonado's escape was caught on camera at the Porter County Jail, showing the inmate jumping into the driver's seat of a squad car and opening the door as the officers had gone to secure their weapons. The video shows Maldonado running out of the building just before the garage door closed.
Once outside the jail, he can be seen sprinting across the property barefoot and in handcuffs. Moments later, police took off after him.
Investigators believe Maldonado stole a car from a nearby business, then later ditched that car. He was found Tuesday in Burns Harbor, about 20 miles away from the jail.
Maldonado had initially been taken into custody Monday for resisting police and possession of a needle after he was pulled over in Portage.
