NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (WTHR) — So there we were...a little bit lost. We did know that we were on beautiful Webster Lake and in the surrounding neighborhood when suddenly I blurted out, "Steve, there's The Dixie! Let's pull over!"
Chuck's Big Adventure has brought us into the presence of familiar and not so familiar sights but this stern wheeler was something I had always wanted to see.
The lake culture of Indiana is a story in and of itself but I had heard of the boat and it's history prior to our trip and just had to stop and take a peek.
The 35 ton Dixie has been cruising the lake since 1929 and has serviced literally generations of passengers.
The boat cruises around the lake for more than an hour. For seven dollars, you can get an enjoyable ride on a historic vessel, but also see an island house where a governor once lived, a cottage with a tree growing through the roof, the location of legendary visits by Al Capone and John Dillinger and much more. On Saturday nights for generations, couples have taken the romantic cruise to sneak a kiss while the sun goes down.
Sadly, the boat was docked when Steve and I visited but many friends, like WTHR TV's Angela Buchman, have told me how much The Dixie Boat means to them. I can't wait to jump on board!
The boat cruises Memorial Day to Labor day, twice a day Monday through Friday, three times on Saturday and five times on Sunday.
