Celebration of life set for doctor who confronted attackers in home invasion

A celebration of life has been organized for a Brownsburg doctor who was killed while defending his family from home intruders.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) — A celebration of life has been organized for a Brownsburg doctor who was killed while defending his family from home intruders.

Dr. Dean Maar, 61, died at his home Nov. 27.

While preparing to host a large Thanksgiving dinner with his extended family, Maar was the victim of a home invasion.

Investigators say they believe there was more than one suspect involved in the home invasion. Authorities have not released any suspect information.

According to Maar's obituary, he confronted the armed attackers and sacrificed his life to save the love of his life.

"His final decision in this life exemplifies his character," the obituary says.

This statement was echoed by a family friend who spoke with Eyewitness News.

"To know Debra was there and she had to go through that just makes you even more angry," family friend Steven Due said.

Dr. Maar worked for OrthoIndy as an orthopedic surgeon. He was described as having a "calm and kind demeanor that brought comfort to and inspired confidence in his patients and their loved ones."

He was recognized as a "Top Doctor" by Indianapolis Monthly for the past six years, and he spent the bulk of his career treating accident victims with serious injuries in emergency rooms.

A celebration of Maar's life will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis. A private burial will take place Wednesday at Crown Hill Cemetery.

"The focus of our investigation is to evaluate all of the evidence that was recovered from the scene and bring Dr. Maar's killers to justice," Captain Amanda Goings of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office said.

If anyone has any information about the case, they are asked to please contact the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office investigations division at 317-745-9354 and reference case number 19-9241.
