Anderson police chief removed after dispute with state trooper

Tony Watters remained silent for months about the arrest of his son, Anderson Police Department officer Adam Watters, in June for domestic battery and nearly being arrested himself by Indiana State Police for his behavior during his son's arrest.

ANDERSON, Ind. (WTHR) — Tony Watters has been removed as chief of the Anderson Police Department.

According to our partners at The Herald Bulletin, Anderson Mayor Tom Broderick Jr. sent an email Monday night at 11:15 p.m. regarding Watters' removal.

Watters remained silent for months about the arrest of his son, Anderson Police Department Ofc. Adam Watters, in June for domestic battery and nearly being arrested himself by Indiana State Police for his behavior during his son's arrest. He said he remained silent at the mayor's request, who is running for re-election in November.

"I don't really know what to say other than I feel like the scapegoat of this election," Watters told The Herald Bulletin.

A press release from Broderick said action was taken Monday evening after receiving a copy of the long-awaited Indiana State Police report.

"This matter would have been resolved long ago if only the prosecutor would have released the report to me in a timely fashion. I do not understand the playing of politics in such an important matter," Broderick said. "I wanted the full story to be able to act in a fair and deliberate manner."

Watters' tenure as police chief will end on Sunday, Oct. 13.
