FORT WAYNE, Ind. 9 (WTHR) — Allen County sheriff's deputy Andrew Peters may have helped deliver Kristen Karhoff's baby, but he still says the credit for being a hero still goes to her.
Peters was performing a traffic stop when Karhoff's husband flagged him down. "My wife is having a baby," Peters said the man told him. According to Fort Wayne's NBC, Peters called an ambulance, grabbed some gloves and went to go help Karhoff in the back seat of their car.
Karhoff said she knew they weren't going to make it to the hospital, but Peters said he told the couple the baby would beat the ambulance. Ten minutes after Peters told Karhoff to push, Chloe Joelle Karhoff came into the world.
"She's the hero," Peters said. "I just caught. She did all the pushing."
Mom, dad and baby are all home for the hospital and doing well. While they're grateful for Peters' help, Karhoff said she hopes next time she's more prepared.
"We joke that if we ever got another pregnancy test, we're buying a kit," said Karhoff. "There will be blankets and tarps and whatever you need."
