PERU, Ind. (WTHR) - A 12-year-old Miami County girl was killed in a crash Tuesday morning in Peru.
The crash happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of US 24 and Broadway Street.
Investigators say a semi pulling a trailer filled with scrap driven by 62-year-old Scott Baker of Eaton was traveling east on US 24 when Baker failed to stop when a light turned red and struck an SUV turning south onto Broadway Street.
The SUV, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by 31-year-old Kristina Buffington of Peru, spun and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Cruz driven by 43-year-old Jayson Hall of Peru. Hall was facing north on Broadway, waiting to turn east onto US 24.
Twelve-year-old Amanda Buffington, who was riding in the Explorer, was pronounced dead at the scene, despite life-saving measures taken by first responders.
Kristina Buffington was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital with life-threatening injuries. Eight-year-old Devin Buffington, a passenger in the SUV, was also flown to Fort Wayne with facial and head injuries, but was listed in stable condition.
Hall was taken by ambulance to a Peru hospital and was later flown by helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Baker was not injured.
"We are currently in the infancy of the crash investigation," Indiana State Police Sergeant Rick Brown said in a release. "Our crash reconstruction team will analyze the evidence collected and prepare a report for the Miami County prosecutor’s office to review."
While the crash remains under investigation, police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
