INDIANAPOLIS — 13News spoke with a Hoosier who, quite literally, had to weather the storm as the small island of Grenada was hit this week by Hurricane Beryl.
"It was nerve-racking," said Elaine Pesto, who said she is currently stuck on the island.
Pesto said she is in Grenada for work. She and other travel agents tried getting off the island before Beryl hit, but she was forced to stay because nothing was available.
"You know, they reassure you that it's going to be fine, that everything is going to be fine, but you don't really know if everything is going to be fine," Pesto said.
According to Pesto, the island completely shut down at 7 p.m. while her hotel made them stay in their rooms after 9 p.m. for safety reasons.
"The first thing they asked is for us to remove all of our patio furniture and bring it inside and then in some of the buildings, maintenance was going to come in and actually tape up the glass windows," Pesto said.
Despite having to endure the storm, Pesto said she's happy she went through it and doesn't want it to stop people from traveling.
"This was an anomaly of a storm," said Pesto. "We know that it's made all kinds of records or whatever, but I don't want it to deter people to travel because this is an amazing country with amazing people and when we were in St. Lucia same thing. It's just an incredible part of the world."
