ANDERSON, Ind. (Herald Bulletin) – The Indiana Supreme Court has disbarred disgraced Anderson lawyer Steve Schuyler for stealing from six estates.
The Indiana Supreme Court issued the decision by a unanimous vote Tuesday.
Schuyler pleaded guilty in 2017 to 15 felony criminal counts and is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence.
His license to practice law was suspended in 2016.
“Respondent (Schuyler) served as either the personal representative, or counsel for the personal representative, in six supervised estates opened for probate in Madison County,” the decision reads. “Over the course of several years, Respondent stole at least $550,000 from the six estates.”
The Supreme Court noted that in the estate case that prompted the initial disciplinary grievance that Schuyler failed to comply with court orders for accounting and distribution of assets and failed to appear numerous times.
The court record shows Schuyler wrote a check that was dishonored for insufficient funds and it was determined he made $164,000 in unauthorized payments to himself.
The parties agreed that Schuyler violated the following Indiana Professional Conduct Rules: knowingly disobeying a court order; knowingly failing to respond to a lawful demand for information from a disciplinary authority; committing criminal acts; engaging in conduct involving dishonesty fraud, deceit or misrepresentation.
