HAMMOND, Ind. — A girl, 14, who was the subject of a recent Amber Alert in Iowa, was located Wednesday in Indiana.

Around 9:30 p.m. Oct. 25, Indiana State Police Trooper Adrian Garcia, on patrol in the area of the Welcome Center on Kennedy Avenue at Interstate 80 in Hammond, was advised by dispatchers that he was "very close" to the last known location of a Chevrolet Cruze that the missing girl was believed to be in.

A short time later, Garcia located the car leaving a hotel and stopped it. The girl was found to be safe in the vehicle, police said. The driver of the car was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the Lake County Jail while awaiting extradition.

The girl was being cared for by Child Protective Services until she can be reunited with a custodial guardian, according to a spokesperson.

Amber Alert vs. Silver Alert: What's the difference?

There are specific standards a person's disappearance must meet in order for police to declare an Amber Alert or a Silver Alert.

Amber Alerts are for children under the age of 18 who are believed to have been abducted and in danger. Police also need to have information about a suspect and their car to issue an Amber Alert.

Silver Alerts are for missing and endangered adults or children. They are much more common for missing people. It was not until last year when the standards for Silver Alerts were expanded to include children.

In both situations, these alerts must be issued by police.
