JAY COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police detectives are investigating after an inmate at the Jay County Jail collapsed and died Monday morning.

Around 7:15 a.m., staff at the jail saw the inmate, identified by state police as 33-year-old Kevin Tyler Whitted, of Muncie, fall forward in the padded cell he was being kept in, according to ISP.

State police said a jail nurse checked on Whitted immediately, and jail staff performed CPR on him until an ambulance arrived. Whitted was taken to IU Health Jay Hospital in Portland, where he was later pronounced dead.

No other inmates were being housed in the same cell with Whitted at the time.

An autopsy was scheduled for Nov. 21.
