13 Investigates has learned a top commander in the Indiana State Police has resigned following a criminal investigation.
Major Jeffrey Walker turned in all of his equipment to state police headquarters today.
He was commander of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement section, the unit that oversees truck enforcement and school bus inspections for state police.
Walker resigned while still at the center of a three-month internal investigation. The 24-year state police veteran was re-assigned out of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement section in January. Eyewitness News has learned that's when ISP's Office of Professional Standards began investigating Walker. What began as a routine internal affairs investigation then turned much more serious. @
"There was information presented to us questioning the operations of the Commercial Motor Vehicle section. In the course of our internal investigation, we came across something we felt could be criminal charges related to sexual misconduct. We submitted that to the Marion County prosecutor," said ISP spokesman Dave Bursten.
Bursten declined to give more details about the allegations or what he meant by the term "sexual misconduct." He did say the prosecutor's office declined to file any charges.
With the criminal investigation completed, ISP then resumed its internal investigation.
"There were several issues related to Major Walker's interactions with other employees and his conduct. He elected to resign as part of the internal investigation, so that has brought our investigation to an end. Jeff Walker is now a former employee of the department. He's done. He's gone. It's a closed issue," Bursten said.
13 Investigates has confirmed other commanders in the CMVE unit have also been re-assigned and they, too, are now under investigation by ISP.
"Yes, there is an internal investigation regarding others in that division, but we cannot release information about that right now until those individuals go through their due process," Bursten said.
