DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police is asking the community for help locating a runaway teen from northeastern Indiana.
Police said 16-year-old Nevaeha Wheaton, of Auburn, Indiana, was last seen around midnight Sunday, Dec. 3 at a family residence. She was also reported to have been at a friend's house in the 6700 block of County Road 71 in Saint Joe, Indiana, shortly after midnight.
ISP believes Wheaton is heading to either Coldwater, Michigan, or Bryan, Ohio, where she is known to have friends. ISP said they have been in contact with those law enforcement agencies.
Wheaton is described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, and has red hair and blue eyes. However, police believe she may have dyed her hair black recently. She was last seen wearing a blue hoodie that read "Jordan."
Anyone with information on Wheaton's whereabouts should contact Indiana State Police at 260-432-8661 or the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department at 260-333-7911.
Amber Alert vs. Silver Alert: What's the difference?
There are specific standards a person's disappearance must meet in order for police to declare an Amber Alert or a Silver Alert.
Amber Alerts are for children under the age of 18 who are believed to have been abducted and in danger. Police also need to have information about a suspect and their car to issue an Amber Alert.
Silver Alerts are for missing and endangered adults or children. They are much more common for missing people. It was not until last year when the standards for Silver Alerts were expanded to include children.
In both situations, these alerts must be issued by police.
