Ability Awareness Day celebrated at Indiana State Fair

Easterseals Crossroads has helped add a sensory-friendly area so families can take a break from the busyness of the Indiana State Fair.

INDIANAPOLIS — While there's something for everyone at the Indiana State Fair, it can be a lot for some.

"The fair is a big place and a hot place," said David Dreith, president and CEO of Easterseals Crossroads. "For a child with autism, they may need a break, and for people with mobility disabilities, riding that wagon around the fair is a huge deal."

That's why Easterseals Crossroads teamed up with the State Fair for Ability Awareness Day on Sunday, Aug. 4 — to show how big events can impact so many.

"As people stop and talk to us, they are learning something a little different about people with disabilities, but not only about their disabilities, but their capabilities as well," Dreith said.

One thing Easterseals Crossroads wanted to add to State Fair Boulevard is a sensory-friendly area so families could take a break from the busyness of the State Fair. The tent is full of several sensory-friendly activities, a garden and even video games.

"Video gaming is a huge equalizer for kids, teens and young adults with disabilities," Dreith said.

Tents are set up at the Indiana State Fair for Ability Awareness Day, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024 in Indianapolis.

While this area is only up for one day, vendors hope people see how disability-friendly the entire state fair is.

"Ability awareness is a wonderful thing to open the eyes of everybody who's walking through the gate," said Justin Moos, vice president of PlayPros.

It also shows how thousands of families are still able to have a fun day.

"Disability does not know demographics, so it really is for all Hoosiers and needs to be celebrated," Dreith said.
