INDIANAPOLIS — With 2023 coming to a close, the Indiana Department of Child Services just released its last year's fatality report.
Throughout the entire year, DCS investigated 308 child deaths and determined 61 were a result of abuse or neglect in 2022.
The Annual Report of Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities in Indiana also highlights the circumstances leading to each fatality and the risk factors that put children in danger.
According to the report, more than two-thirds of the deaths involved a child 3 years old or younger, and 17 of them were due to abuse.
Death by weapon, including body parts, was the leading cause of deaths listed in 36% of cases.
