KOKOMO, Ind. — An Indiana Department of Child Services family case manager in Howard County has received an award from the American Red Cross for his quick action to save an infant from choking.

Christian Lewis, of Kokomo, was conducting a supervised family visit in March when he noticed an infant starting to choke on a snack. The infant reportedly began to turn blue in the face when Lewis used first aid training to help save the infant from choking.

In recognition of his actions, Lewis was awarded the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders. The award is the highest award given by the organization. Lewis was presented the award by Sarah Moss, the executive director of the Red Cross Central Indiana Chapter, on June 12 at the Howard County DCS Office

“It is a true testament of our mission to be able to present Christian with one of the highest honors, the Red Cross awards, the Lifesaving Award,” Moss said. “We never truly know when an emergency is going to happen. With the skills Christian learned in his Red Cross training, he was able to act quickly and confidently and save the baby’s life. We are so proud to have been given the opportunity to recognize Christian for his heroic actions.”
