LAWRENCE, Indiana — Starting this weekend, some students in Lawrence will be getting a front row seat to all the action at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials.
Actually, they will be part of the event, playing a huge role in taking care of the athletes' belongings while they're in the pool.
Event planners had put out the call to schools across the state, seeking students to be "basket carriers." They'll go onto the pool deck and collect a swimmer's personal items to make sure the deck stays clear.
They need 105 basket carriers for the event. Nearly a dozen high school swimmers were selected from Lawrence Township schools.
"I'm really excited to be able to have the opportunity like this to work at such a big meet and be around such great swimmers, these Olympians, to be so close to them and all that," said Kai-Wen Minnich, a senior.
In all, the basket carriers will take care of the belongings for more than 1,000 swimmers over nine days. Each volunteer will work every other day.
