INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Some Metro police officers are serving as camp counselors this week, helping kids at GREAT camp.
GREAT stands for Gang Resistance and Training. It's meant to be fun, but also educational, teaching kids about all the options they have besides gang activity.
"Hopefully, we're adding to some of the things they've learned at home or school, so when they come to the hard decisions or difficult choices or who to choose as a friend, they remember their interaction at camp and what they had with an officer," said IMPD Chief Bryan Roach.
This year, there are 40 kids ages 9 to 14 attending the two-week camp.
While the majority of counselors are officers, some are former campers who wanted to help and give back.
