INDIANAPOLIS β On Monday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department swore in prospective officers for the department's 28th recruit class.
Thirty-five recruits were sworn in. They will now spend 28 weeks completing classroom and scenario-based training at the IMPD academy. Then, they'll receive 20 more weeks of field training.
IMPD said they're placing an emphasis on increased communication skills, de-escalation, spotting mental health emergencies and implicit bias training.
The department is still trying to fill 200 open positions.
