IMPD officer, suspect exchange gunfire before police chase in downtown Indianapolis

The shooting happened just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, a couple of blocks south of Monument Circle.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two suspects were arrested after an officer-involved shooting turned into a police chase in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday.

Just before 3:30 a.m. on June 1, officers near the intersection of East Georgia and South Meridian streets heard gunfire a couple of blocks south of Monument Circle. Officers arrived on the scene and found two suspects. Gunfire was then exchanged with one of the suspects.

IMPD said no officers or suspects were injured in the shooting.

The suspects then left the scene in a vehicle and led police on a short chase before crashing into unoccupied cars in the 800 block of North East Street, near Mass Ave.

Officers arrested two suspects and found a gun during the arrests.

An IMPD spokesperson said the officer who fired their gun was placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. He was later identified as 15-year veteran Officer Joseph Beasley.

According to IMPD, Beasley had on a body-worn camera, which was not activated during the incident.

This is an ongoing investigation.
