INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD said a man who was armed is in "serious but stable condition" after he was shot by police Friday morning on the city's northeast side.
Officers responded to a report of a person with a gun with shots being fired Nov. 10 around 11 a.m. in the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue, near 38th Street and North Keystone Avenue.
When officers arrived, IMPD said they stayed behind their cars and shouted for the man to drop the gun.
Initially, police said the man complied and put the weapon down and then lied down.
Officers then asked the man to walk toward them. They said the man initially complied, but then ran toward where the gun was on the ground.
Officers shouted for the man to stop, and then, one officer fired a shot, hitting the man.
Police said medics transported the man to a hospital in "serious but stable condition."
Police confirmed there were no injuries to officers or anyone else not involved in the incident. Police also said they are not actively looking for anyone else as part of their investigation.
The man is facing preliminary charges of criminal recklessness (Level 5 felony), resisting law enforcement (Level 6 felony) and unlawful possession of a gun (Level 6 felony).
Residents of the neighborhood were left with questions after the gunfire.
"I was sitting on the couch with my granddaughter, and I heard five gunshots. Bap, bap, bap, bap, bap. That's all I heard," said Melinda Welch, who was babysitting next door.
Those gunshots are what IMPD said drew the attention of a neighbor, who called police and said the man behind the gun "was acting erratic."
"Well, the guy had a mental problem, but I mean, he didn't bother nobody," said Earl, who lives nearby. "When I barbeque, he sits out on his patio and just be playing his music and just sits on the front porch and just be playing his music. Like I said, he don't bother nobody."
Police confirmed that family of the man told investigators he had mental health issues.
"A lot of what our officers faced are dealing with a lot of mental health runs," IMPD Deputy Chief Michael Wolley said. "Our officers aren't necessarily always equipped to be able to handle these, and so, any agency, entity that is willing to step up and help take this burden off our officers would be appreciated."
The incident is under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
