IMPD Officer David Moore

Indianapolis - Eyewitness News sources have confirmed Indianapolis Metro Police Officer David Moore passed away at 6:18 am Wednesday.

IMPD Chief Paul Ciesielski announced Tuesday that Officer Moore would not survive injuries he sustained when he was shot Sunday morning. IMPD dispatch ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Moore. (Listen to the audio here.)

The 29-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds during a traffic stop near 34th and Keystone Avenue.

The grave results of the officer's MRI led Moore's family to decide to eventually take him off of life support, although Moore passed away peacefully early Wednesday before that happened.

Moore's family decided to donate his organs and kept him on life support until that process could be completed. (Read more from David Moore's parents, who held a news conference Wednesday morning.)

Since the shooting dozens of police have been keeping vigil at Wishard Hospital as they waited to hear news about officer Moore's condition.

Early Wednesday, the chief sent out a page to every officer on the force to let them know that Moore passed away.

David Moore joined IMPD in 2004, following in the footsteps of his parents, both career officers.

Moore was Rookie Officer of the Year in 2005. Four years later he received the Medal of Valor for the courage shown in a life-threatening confrontation. In November 2008, Moore shot and killed a man who aimed a gun at him and fellow officers.

At Roncalli High School where Moore was a gifted athlete and leader, there was no doubt he'd succeed at whatever he did.  He played defensive end for the Rebels and was co-captain of the 1999 state championship team. He also holds the record as the school's strongest athlete, bench pressing nearly twice his weight.

A memorial page has been set up for him on Facebook.

Statement from Congressman André Carson (D-IN07):

"The collective heart of our beloved city sank today when Officer David Moore passed away this morning. After answering his community's call to service, Officer Moore is now moving on to a higher calling, as difficult as it may be for all of us see him go.

"There's no doubt Officer Moore knew the dangers of police work, as both of his parents were part of the IMPD family. But like so many who wear the badge in communities across our nation, David Moore took an oath to serve and protect others. To run to danger-not away from it. Officer Moore did just that, and our community is better and safer because of his service and sacrifice.

"In honor of Officer Moore, let us never forget the daily sacrifices our law enforcement officers make in order to protect our families and neighborhoods. This week, I've asked my colleagues in Congress to pay respect to Officer Moore by going back to their districts and thanking their local law enforcement officers for the work they do and the daily dangers they place themselves in to protect us all.

"Mariama and I join the entire City of Indianapolis in mourning the loss of this hero. And we'll continue to keep Officer Moore's family and the entire police department in our thoughts and prayers."
