IMPD K-9 officer helps arrest 16-year-old for armed carjacking of rideshare driver

The suspect was caught by the K-9 while running away from police with a gun.

INDIANAPOLIS — A K-9 officer helped IMPD arrest a teenager for an armed carjacking of a rideshare driver Sunday.

Just after midnight May 12, IMPD officers responded to the 3200 block of North California Street, near West 32nd Street, on a report of the armed robbery.

When officers arrived on scene, they learned that the victim, a rideshare driver, was picking up his customers when the group of four got into his car and allegedly pointed handguns at him. The suspects then demanded the driver get out of the car, and they drove away.

Just a couple hours later, officers found the suspect car, thanks to automatic license plate readers, in the 6200 block of Allisonville Road on the north side of Indianapolis.

Officers tried to stop the car, but the suspects refused and led police on a brief chase before stopping in the 4000 block of North Keystone Avenue.

According to police, one of the suspects – a 17-year-old girl – stayed in the car and was immediately taken into custody. Police said at least two other people in the car ran from the scene.

Police said one of the fleeing suspects was caught by a K-9 officer and had a handgun when he was taken into custody. Police arrested the 16-year-old for armed robbery, dangerous possession of a firearm and resisting law enforcement.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision for the teen.

Police said the other person who ran from the scene was not apprehended. According to police, the 17-year-old girl who stayed in the car was transported to the IMPD robbery office and then released to a family member.

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Scott Nickels at the IMPD Robbery Officer at 317-327-3475 or email him at Scott.Nickels@indy.gov.
