INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - As part of their efforts to be transparent, Indianapolis Metro Police laid out the events that led up to a man getting shot by one of their officers Wednesday.
The shooting stems from the arrest of 39-year-old Stephen Cole. When Metro Officer James Perry attempted to arrest Cole, investigators say 50-year-old Gerald Cole interfered and tried to disarm the officer.
It happened at 35 N. Denny at around 3:00 pm Wednesday.
Police had responded to their home on a report about theft involving another family member who called for help.
"We have statements from witnesses that were directly there at the time of Mr. Cole attacking our officer and trying to take his weapon," said Major Richard Riddle, IMPD.
Gerald Cole is recovering from a gunshot wound to the back and arm and is expected to also face charges.
The officer is on standard administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting.
"This is a family matter and now you got one person in jail and another one may not make it over a dispute, a family dispute. I thought a family dispute - you call the police to protect, not to incite more chaos," said a man at the scene.
Family members were extremely shaken up about the shooting.
