Alcohol a suspected factor in Sam Jones Expressway crash that killed man, dog

The crash happened Sunday shortly after 7 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a deadly crash that happened Sunday evening on the city's southwest side.

According to a release from IMPD, officers responded to a serious crash around 7 p.m. Dec. 10 on the Sam Jones Expressway, near Interstate 465, that involved a sedan and a shuttle van.

IMPD said the driver of the sedan, only identified at this time as an adult male, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

A dog also riding in the sedan died, according to IMPD.

Multiple passengers were inside the shuttle van at the time of the crash. They had complaints of pain following the crash, IMPD said.

According to IMPD, a preliminary investigation shows the sedan likely crashed into the back of the shuttle van. Detectives believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The southbound lanes of the Sam Jones Expressway were shut down during the investigation.
