INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is asking for the public's help after determining a fatal far east Indianapolis motorcycle crash in late March was a hit-and-run.
The crash was reported shortly after midnight Tuesday, March 26 along East 30th Street near Pawnee Drive. That's in between North Mitthoefer and North German Church roads.
A police spokesperson said officers found a motorcycle and the driver on the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver was taken in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital, where they were pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Family members identified the driver as Brent Markey.
In an update April 23, detectives said they now believe the incident was a hit-and-run. Assistance from community members, as well as new evidence at the scene, led detectives to believe a second vehicle was involved.
"It's very likely we may have never known what took place if it hadn't been for a member of the community who stepped forward and provided our detectives with this information," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said.
The only suspect vehicle description police have is that one of the vehicles was likely to be a white work van.
"Anybody who knows of an individual that may have been in that area, business that may have worked on a vehicle that had damage, those individuals may have information they can provide with detectives, and that's often the case that we find during hit-and-run investigations," Foley said.
IMPD is asking anyone with additional information on the investigation to reach out to the crash investigations division at 317-327-6549.
