INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — IMPD Chief Bryan Roach will meet reporters Thursday to discuss the in-custody death that occurred earlier this month.
Police said 43-year-old Eleanor Northington became combative at a church on Feb. 6. Police believed she was having a mental health crisis. When officers tried to approach her, they say she began assaulting them. Officers physically restrained her, and put her in handcuffs.
They noticed a short time later Northington wasn't breathing. Police say they removed the handcuffs, performed CPR and transported her to the hospital in critical condition. She later died.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while officials investigate. Their names haven't ben released.
It's not the first time in recent history IMPD has had someone die in custody.
Sixty-five-year-old Paul Daniels died in police custody last September. IMPD released the timeline of the events leading up to Daniels' death. In that incident, the coroner found no evidence of blunt force trauma or signs of asphyxiation.
Roach will meet with reporters at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Check back for updates after the briefing.
