IMPD: Attempted ATM theft leads to chase, car fire and search for suspects along I-65

The incident began at a bank near South East Street and East Hanna Avenue around 5 a.m. Thursday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD officers are searching for suspects who allegedly attempted to steal an ATM and led police on a chase early Thursday on Indianapolis' south side.

Shortly before 5:15 a.m. Nov. 30, officers responded to a PNC Bank the 4200 block of South East Street, near East Hanna Avenue, for a report of "suspicious people attempting to steal an ATM." At the scene, officers located the suspects' car with chains hanging from the back of it.

The officers attempted to pull over the car, which had at least two people inside, but the driver led them on a "brief vehicle pursuit," police said. That chase was called off when the car was on Interstate 65 on the south side, near Southport Road.

"As officers were returning to their assigned area an officer observed the suspect vehicle on fire near the rear wheel," IMPD said in a statement.

The officer attempted to put out the fire, but it reignited and fully engulfed the car, prompting multiple lanes of I-65 to be blocked in the area for several hours early Thursday.
