IMPD: Driver killed in 2-car crash on Indy's northwest side

The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. Friday near the intersection of West 56th Street and Lafayette Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after one person was killed in a crash on Indianapolis' northwest side early Friday.

The crash between a SUV and sedan was reported around 2:30 a.m. June 21 near the intersection of West 56th Street and Lafayette Road.

An IMPD spokesperson said the driver of the sedan was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was not injured and was taken for a blood draw, which is standard procedure in fatal crash investigations.

Police told 13News the SUV was traveling east on 56th Street, while the sedan was stopped at the light when it suddenly accelerated for unknown reasons.

The department's fatal crash investigation team will look into the cause and further circumstances of the incident.

The intersection fully reopened around 4:45 a.m. Friday.
