INDIANAPOLIS — A firefighter was taken to an Indianapolis hospital after falling through the floor while battling a house fire on the city's near east side early Tuesday.
Around 3:30 a.m. Nov. 21, Indianapolis Fire Department crews responded to reports of the fire in the 200 block of North Rural Street, near East New York Street. At the scene they found fire coming from the second floor of a vacant house.
Within a few minutes of firefighters reaching the second floor, a firefighter fell through the floor. The firefighter was able to walk out of the building without help and was taken to Methodist Hospital with minor injuries, IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith told 13News.
Another firefighter suffered a minor injury but did not require transport to the hospital via ambulance, Reith said.
In an update around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, IFD said both firefighters who had been injured had been released from local hospitals and will continue their recovery at home.
The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. The cause remains under investigation.
