INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers have been enjoying a fairly mild fall season so far, but that streak is about to end.
As the first snow comes blowing in, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works is deploying crews to treat the roads starting at 11 p.m. Wednesday and throughout the day Thursday.
"I'm prepped," said Elizabeth Darrough.
"I'm not prepped," said Olivia Williams.
Darrough and Williams were doing some holiday shopping at Sullivan Hardware & Garden Wednesday. They may be opposites when it comes to preparation for the incoming snow, cold and wind, but they did agree on one thing.
"I think it's a beautiful time of year. I think it makes it feel like the holidays are here, which is great since it's been 70 (degrees)," said Williams.
It also means they'll have to start thinking of some other things, too.
"The biggest thing, honestly, is preparing our vehicle. We live in an apartment. We don't have a garage or anything, so making sure you have stuff to scrape the windows and everything like that, making sure your windshield fluid doesn't freeze," Darrough said.
Pat Sullivan, owner of Sullivan's Hardware, said this first round of snow might not be severe enough for salt, but it will likely remind people to stock up before they need it.
"I think it's a good time to be thinking about what's coming," Sullivan said. "Kind of remind you you need a scraper, snow shovel and ice melt. Do you need it tonight? Probably not."
13News previously reported DPW has 64 new drivers this season. While those drivers do their jobs, motorists are reminded to keep some distance from the snow plows.
