Hoosier finalist makes a strong case in Great American Grandma contest

Everybody probably thinks their grandma is the best. Not everyone can say their's is a national finalist to prove it.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - General Electric is looking for a great American grandma to be their next spokesperson.

A 76 year old from Indiana is one of the finalists, and she makes a pretty strong case.

Everybody probably thinks their grandma is the best. Not everyone can say their's is a national finalist to prove it.

Jill Ridge has three grandchildren. She does all the usual grandma stuff, like baking cookies.

But does your grandma teach volunteer dance lessons at nursing homes, or do Cross Fit at 76?

Ridge does, three times a week.

"I went this morning, you bet I did. I did 33 thrusters with 35 pounds," she said.

It's part of why she is a top 10 finalist in GE's Great American Grandma search.

And she's got the endorsements of her grandchildren.

Married 55 years, the former librarian says winning would be nice, but that being a grandma really means something.

"It used to be my favorite part was paper dolls, cars, playing with the kids now their in their 20s the favorite part now is simply giving them support," said Ridge.

Now, though, it's her family doing the encouraging.

"My grandkids have been working overtime with supporting me," she said.

The winning grandma gets five new appliances and $50,000 a year as a part-time GE spokesperson.
