INDIANAPOLIS — A new historical marker in Indianapolis pays tribute to a native son who became a pioneering jazz guitarist.
The marker, located north of the Bottleworks Hotel near 10th and Bellefontaine streets, honors John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery. Wednesday's dedication was held on what would have been Montgomery's 101st birthday.
Montgomery recorded a string of successful albums over three decades, starting in the 1940s. He won two Grammys and appeared on classic television shows, including "The Tonight Show."
He's remembered for his groundbreaking techniques and the work that inspired generations of musicians. Montgomery was inducted into the Indianapolis Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. His brothers, Monk and Buddy, have also been inducted into the hall of fame.
Montgomery died on June 15, 1968, at the age of 45.
