High water cancels Madison Regatta

High water on the Ohio River canceled the Madison Regatta hydroplanes, marking the first cancellation of Governor's Cup races in the event's 63 years.

High water on the Ohio River canceled the Madison Regatta hydroplanes, marking the first cancellation of Governor's Cup races in the event's 63 years.

Organizers said Saturday that heavy rains in the area this week had kept the swollen river from receding to acceptable levels as they had hoped.

High water creates concerns such as floating debris on the race course and a lack of space in the pit area.

Organizers say they couldn't reschedule because drivers had commitments in other cities.

About 7,000 fans came out Sunday, even without racing - compared to a normal turnout of 15-20,000. Organizers say they took a financial hit, but their attention will be turned to the 2014 race.
