Two Indy youth groups come together to plant community garden

Two youth groups partnered to plant organic tomatoes, herbs, flowers, peppers and melons.

INDIANAPOLIS — Saturday, several kids spent the day planting their own community garden outside Martindale Church of Christ on the city’s near north side.

It’s part of the Helping Ninjas goal to help the planet, others and themselves.

“It’s not as hard as it looks. This garden behind us actually started as a grassy field and in a few hours, we had a garden,” Lindsey Berry, the organizer for Helping Ninjas, said. “Start small and learn how to do it. That’s what we are doing here. We are teaching kids how to grow food.”

Berry said it’s important to teach kids how to have access to fresh produce and help others.

The groups also learned how to harvest and cook their own plants--enjoying homemade salsa as an example.
