HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — Hamilton County sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly crash near Cicero Wednesday afternoon.
The crash was reported shortly after 3:30 p.m. June 12 at the intersection of East 234th Street and Cumberland Road.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, an SUV was going northbound on Cumberland Road and stopped at the stop sign for 234th Street, while a motorcycle was going east on 234th Street, heading toward Cumberland Road.
Deputies noted that eastbound and westbound traffic have the right-of-way at the intersection.
As the motorcycle was approaching the intersection with the right-of-way, the SUV started turning left from Cumberland Road onto 234th Street. Deputies said the motorcycle started to brake but was unable to avoid the crash and slid on its side and into the SUV.
According to deputies, the SUV rolled over and stopped on its driver side in the embankment on 234th Street.
The motorcycle passenger, identified by the Hamilton County Coroner's Office as 31-year-old Steffanie Pickett, of Cicero, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies said the motorcycle driver had multiple serious injuries from the crash, and medics transported the driver by helicopter to Methodist Hospital.
Medics transported the driver of the SUV by ambulance to Methodist Hospital with pain and internal injuries, according to deputies.
The intersection was closed for multiple hours Wednesday afternoon but had reopened by 6 p.m., the sheriff's office said.
According to Hamilton County Public Safety Communications, Pickett was a 911 dispatcher who had served Hamilton County for five years.
