Grant County armed carjacking suspects arrested after chase ends in Noblesville

Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Melton said a man ran into the Hamilton East Public Library, and a juvenile boy ran toward the Hardee's.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office confirmed two people are in custody in connection to a Grant County armed carjacking, which led to a chase that ended near a Noblesville library Monday afternoon.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Melton said two suspects – a man and a juvenile boy – stole a car from someone in Grant County by threatening them with a gun July 15.

In an update July 17, the Marion Police Department said the incident happened at a business in the 800 block of North Miller Avenue, near West Kem Road. A female victim told police she was getting out of her car when a male asked to use her phone. That suspect then pushed a gun into her side and threatened to shoot her before taking her purse and driving off with the other suspect in her car.

The stolen car's information was entered into a state database, and Madison County Sheriff's Department deputies located and tried to stop the car, which led to a chase that entered Hamilton County.

Melton said deputies deployed stop sticks at State Road 37 and 186th Street, which the stolen car avoided.

According to Melton, the stolen car went off the road at North 17th and Conner streets, while also crashing into two other vehicles that weren't involved in the chase. Melton said nobody was injured in the crash.

After crashing the stolen car, Melton said the suspects ran from the scene, with the man going into the Hamilton East Public Library and the juvenile boy running toward a nearby Hardee's restaurant.

Melton said both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

The male who threatened the victim with the gun is the juvenile and was driving the stolen car, Marion police said. Police said he faces preliminary charges of armed robbery, intimidation, pointing a loaded firearm and motor vehicle theft.

A passenger, a 26-year-old man, has been formally charged with resisting law enforcement, according to online court records. Police said he also faces preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft.

Both suspects were being held on a $30,000 bond, police said.

The Hamilton East Public Library was closed for the rest of Monday and reopened Tuesday morning.

The Marion Police Department, Grant County Sheriff's Office, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and Noblesville Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident.
