NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - Hamilton County officials cut the ribbon on a new $13.5 million jail facility Friday afternoon.
The nearly 15,000 square foot expansion adds an additional 120 beds to the jail facility.
“We’re busting at the seams,” Hamilton County Sheriff Dennis Quakenbush said.
“The jail was built 25 years ago to hold 296 inmates. We’re currently pushing 400 inmates. I would expect that situation to get worse before it gets better,” Quakenbush added.
The initial expansion of the jail adds five cell pods with 38 prefabricated steel cells consisting of two and four-person cells.
The expansion also included an interior recreation area, classroom and medical support area.
A second phase of the project could add an additional 136 beds.
Inmates move into the new facility July 8.
