BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Brownsburg school officials are investigating how a gun got into a first grader's backpack.
The unloaded handgun fell out of the student's backpack during dismissal Monday at Reagan Elementary School while the student was getting ready to leave for the day. The gun was secured by school police.
The student told school officials they did not know the handgun was in their backpack. The school spoke with the student's family, who said they believe it was put into the backpack by someone other than the student.
In a message to parents of students at the school, the school district said there will be "appropriate consequences" for the student, and the student will not be at school while officials have further conversations with the student's family.
The district was also reaching out by phone to the families of those in the student's class.
