Guests say Indianapolis restaurant giving away more than food on Thanksgiving

More than 450 meals were served Thursday at Chef Borel's Kitchen.

INDIANAPOLIS — Chef Borel's Kitchen gave out more than 400 meals Thursday, but the people who received them said the business is giving away more than food.

Owner Theresa Borel said giving away free meals is just another way she shows her love for the community.

"It's really important for business owners to give back to the community," Borel said. "That shows the community how we appreciate their patronage."

She and her family of volunteers packed and gave away more than 450 containers of food.

"This is a blessing. Come here and get a meal and be happy," said Kettina Ealy.

Stephen Fernald picked up two meals, including one for his uncle. He said buying a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings wasn't in the budget this year.

"It's getting pricier to be able to eat these days. This is very helpful. This will keep us able to pay the bills this week and keep us satisfied," said Fernald.

Some people waiting in line outside Chef Borel's said they have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. They're adding a free Thanksgiving meal to their list.

"You got to show people that you care. This is also one of the high suicide rate times, Thanksgiving, because people don't have family and might not have a way to get to things like this," said Reginald Scruggs.

Borel said they plan to offer a free meal on Easter.
