Coats for Kids: Good News with Dave Calabro

Winter collection for The Salvation Army of Central Indiana's annual Coats for Kids program is underway!

INDIANAPOLIS — Dave Calabro's ongoing search for positive, uplifting stories took him preparations for the annual Coats for Kids Drive this week.

He met Mark from The Salvation Army.

"The good news is people in Indianapolis are always very generous, and so we have over 2,800 coats that have come in so far, but we have 2,300 we still need," Mark said. "5,200 Children never registered, so we need at least that many coats to serve them."

The deadline to help is fast approaching.

"We're going until October 19th, so they can bring their coats into Classic Cleaners and get them cleaned and we'll get these out to kids," said Mark.

Dave asked a Coats for Kids volunteer about the feeling he gets from helping such a good cause.

"Oh, it's just a wonderful feeling," he said. Very warm feeling, you know, and the kids are smiling and it's just great."

You can help!

Winter coat collection for The Salvation Army of Central Indiana's annual Coats for Kids program is underway.

The program, in partnership with WTHR and Classic Cleaners, collects winter coats, gloves, hats and scarves to serve 5,000 children in central Indiana.

"They're sorted by cleaning instructions, whether dry cleaned or wet cleaned. They're sorted by brand new or gently used and we'll look at them as far as spots and see if there is any spots that we need to pretreat before we clean," Amanda Foster with Classic Cleaners said.

Alternatively, every donation of $25 to The Salvation Army's online coat shop allows the organization to buy a coat for a child registered in the program. For how you can make a monetary donation to help, click here.

The Coats for Kids distribution event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds' Blue Ribbon Pavilion, located at 1202 E. 38th St. in Indianapolis.

Parents or caregivers will be required to provide either a valid ID or Coats for Kids registration confirmation email with them to shop for coats, and children will need to be present to try on the items.
